The Final Countdown!

As we move, skip, dance and twirl into the end of the year here are some of the projects to keep our CSDA wolves engaged in their last classes of art for the year!
4th and 5th grade Coral Reefs: We had an author/ illustrator visit this Wednesday, Jason Chin, from Burlington, VT. Take a look at his work here: http://jasonchin.net/
Mr. Chin illustrated and wrote a book: Coral Reefs which inspired us to create our own coral reef paintings. We created a cool color background and added warm colors for the coral. Adding the animal was very fun and we were able to study how to draw different animals that live in the coral reef.

Coral Reef display, all classes combined!
Mrs. Gagne is already thinking about next school year!  All 5th and 6th Graders painted murals to welcome us back to school next year. This was a huge hit with the kiddos!
4th Grade Teacher Portraits: What a way to say goodbye to our classroom teachers and review the measurements of facial features. Portraits are tricky because we always like to make them look "realistic". Mrs. Gagne likes to remind her kiddos that it's okay to make it your way, we have camera for "perfect pictures" to capture people. It's WAY more fun to draw it your way and in your style!

5th Grade Ecology Field Trip

I was a lucky duck this past Wednesday and was able to attend the beloved 5th grade Ecology field trip. This trip is right in our backyard here at CSDA!  We are SO lucky to have the trails to utilize as well as the Science program Mrs. Penny has offered us to create something as fun and engaging as this experience. I ran station 9, which was the outdoor art station. We looked at artwork by one of my favorite artists, Andy Goldsworthy  and then, we were off to create with using the forest around us. We found lots of decomposing birch trees ( birch bark makes Mrs. Gagne SUPER happy!), acorns, and signs of wildlife. What a day!
A fairy home collaborative evolved!

 And Gnome Homes

A nice little entrance for a fairy to visit
 Spider home!
CSDA spelled out in moss= genius idea!

Outdoor observations with oil pastels when finished creating!
Happy Memorial Day Weekend. We took a moment at our school assembly to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
These poppy flowers were made by 6th grade students for our assembly this morning.

Closing Term 2 and March Makings!

Things are warming up and melting outside! You can feel the energy of spring bouncing around the art studio at CSDA!
Lots of mediums have been out in the art room for a "Hero" school wide project taking place.
All grades completed a combined library/ art studio project about students "Everyday Hero".
In  the library, the goal was to write about someone who inspires students and is a hero in their everyday life. In the art studio, we designed the frames to go around the written work by adding character traits in block letters or collage and applying mixed media to add color and details.

Grade 6: Everyday Heroes, Mr. Snoke's Class

Grade 5: Castle Prints, Mrs. Palmer's Class

Up Next:
Grade 4: Personal Flag Designs
Grade 5: Clay Gargoyles

January Makings!

Happy January! Art is always the best medicine for winters in New England. Keeps our minds and hands busy!
5th and 6th graders have been working on the same project: Optical Illusion Boxes. Ample amounts of effort and time went into these six sided designs. We focused on our "craftsmanship" and what that looks like in artwork. It was a challenge for both sets of grades to come up with six separate optical illusion designs, but as always the artists rise to the challenge!

4th graders finished their African unit by creating Kente cloth weaving. We learned about what Kente cloth is and read a story about the legend of Kente Cloth. We took three classes to weave around yogurt containers. The artists LOVED this project. Some artists commented how weaving "calms their mind". What a great mindfulness activity!

Next Up: All grades are starting to design a frame for a piece of written work they have been writing in Library. The big idea: who is my everyday hero. They have lots of material choices in this project so I am excited to see the final projects! Stay Tuned!
